Allotments

Allotment at Peggs

We currently have 77 allotments at Peggs in New Road, Bourne End, but are actively looking for an additional site (preferably in Wooburn) to accommodate those on our waiting list.  The allotment manager is Mr George Whalley, often to be found tending plots.

Allotments are managed by the Open Spaces committee, who judge the Best Kept Allotment competition.

Top Tips

  • Protect from rabbits and carrot flies with nets, discourage slugs with crushed eggshells and orange halves, and attract wasps away with jars of sugary liquid placed away from produce.
  • Keep your plot ecofriendly.  Instead of buying plastic plant pots, make your own from old newspapers.  Fold a piece in half, roll it around a cardboard tube, pull that out, scrunch up the paper at the bottom, and push inside, forming a base.
  • While it may seem tempting at first to go on a planting frenzy, exercise some restraint.  By planting a few seeds at a time each week, you'll end up with just one or two lettuces each week, as opposed to 30 all at once.
  • A plot can be overgrown by weeds in one season, so cover chunks with old carpet (available from most carpet shops).
  • Good compost equals a good plot.  As a general rule, aim for two thirds brown and one third green, and get a large bin to speed up compost production.
  • Remember that, in a fight of nature v man, nature always wins.  Though you may have visions of free melon, work with the site and the soil you have, and begin with the most simple, family-friendly crops.
